Baileywick Guidance and Counseling Program

Guidance and Counseling Services

The school counselor coordinates a school-wide program for all students focusing on the North Carolina Guidance Curriculum, which includes the areas of academic development, career/life skills development and person/social development. Every year a Comprehensive Guidance Plan is developed to support student success. The student-centered program provides appropriate instruction and assistance at each grade level as well as individual and group counseling opportunities for students.

PTA Guidance and Counseling Advisory Committee

At Baileywick the guidance services are extended for students by the counselor working closely with a PTA Guidance Committee composed of four subcommittees. The Guidance chairperson represents Guidance on the PTA Board and coordinates the four subcommittees. The 2006-2007 Guidance and Counseling Advisory Co-Chairpersons are Ann Blocha and Karen Gardner.

If you are interested in supporting students to be the best they can be, join one of the committees on the Guidance Committee by filling out the appropriate spot of the PTA Volunteer Survey or calling Dee Bostick at 518-0078.

Character Education

Parent Workshops

Character Education Program The Character Education Program has been and continues to be an important way that we remind our entire school community to strive to be our best. The Guidance committee organizes videos, activities, and information on the character trait for the month.  For the Kindergarten and 1 st Grade, our guidance counselor focuses on the trait in classroom guidance sessions each month.

This year when students display a character trait, they can be recognized in the Baileywick Best Hall of Fame with their name on a brick. Every Monday, the principal or assistant principal puts children's bricks on the wall who have been nominated by their teachers for using a character trait. These children are given a special Baileywick's Best pencil. The Baileywick's Best program offers a special sense of pride for all students' bricks build our Hall of Fame as the year proceeds.

Students who do an outstanding job using the character traits have their name put on a gold brick. All students who recieve bricks receive a note to take home to their parents.

Guidance Resources

Projects - This committee assists with many programs and coordinates the PTA's purchase of Premier agendas for all Baileywick students in 3 rd , 4 th , and 5 th grades, and helps with bulletin boards and posters. Other special projects are the December Kindness Programs including a Canned Food Drive and Holiday Hugs gift giving program. The Canned Food Drive is conducted in conjunction with Baileywick's student council and Lowe's Foods Friends Feeding Friends program. During this program Baileywick students and volunteers work with Lowe's Food to donate food items to a local food bank. . The Holiday Hugs program encourages Baileywick families to purchase a gift of small items for other Baileywick children carefully identified as needing assistance. During Counselor's week, Dee Bostick and the Guidance committee share something special with the students and staff. In addition, this committee sponsors that share-a-shirt program. For the share-a-shirt program, Baileywick shirts are donated and given to students who might not be able to afford a new shirt.

Resources A resource corner has been established in the Media Center with reference books, and video and audio tapes on parenting skills and teaching tips as well as children's books on topics such as divorce, death, fears, and feelings for adult checkout. A file library was also established that contains articles on parenting tips which parents and teachers can use. Dee Bostick can also provide you with a list of tutors and counseling services available in the community. A resource display can also be found outside the guidance office.

Additionally, this committee provides students and parents with any other resources needed such as the Clothing Closet and School Supplies Bin.
